OPTO-CH 2016 workshop

June 27- July 02, 2016

Join us for an exciting journey to Crete to become acquainted with the latest developments on non-invasive optical technologies and explore their field applications in Cultural Heritage research and conservation with emphasis to resilience against climate events

AIMS AND CONTENT

OPTO-CH 2016 workshop will introduce participants to applications of advanced laser-based technologies in Cultural Heritage (CH) science, diagnostics and conservation. Lectures from experts on modern laser diagnostic and analytical techniques, as well as on laser cleaning methodologies will be combined with practical demonstrations and laboratory hands-on sessions. Two days of field tests and experiments on-site at selected monuments in Crete is also foreseen.

TIME-LINE:

Application deadline:           March 20, 2016

Notice of acceptance:          March 29, 2016

OPTO-CH 2016 workshop:  June 27- July 02, 2016

WORKSHOP SERIES OUTLINE:

The lectures will introduce participants to the cultural background and conservation environment of the Eastern Mediterranean, and Crete in particular, and to the general concepts and principles of operation of each laser-based technique with emphasis on their analytical and diagnostic potential and applications. Selected examples and case studies will be thoroughly analysed to illustrate how optical technologies can be used in CH research and conservation. The last two days of the workshop are dedicated to field tests and experiments on-site at a selected monument in Crete in order to demonstrate the applicability of the techniques in practice.

T O P I C S

  • Materials analysis with Optical Spectroscopy (LIBS, Raman)
  • Optical coherence metrology for structural diagnosis
  • Imaging and mapping; multispectral, multi-photon and THz
  • Laser cleaning

ADDITIONAL LECTURES:

-Concepts and issues in conservation research

-Binding media and painting techniques

-Pigments and their identification

-Detecting color remains on historic stonework; an analytical challenge

-e-tools for managing the use of analytical, diagnostic and conservation methodologies

-Geophysical – satellite remote sensing and archaeo-environment

-Discussion with the participants

Participants are invited to present cases studied they are involved in and discuss challenges that might be addressed by optical diagnostic techniques.

FIELD TRIP:

On 01- 02 July 2016, a field trip to a selected monument in Crete is scheduled.

PARTICIPANTS:

Maximum number of participants: 15

The workshop concept relies on a) strong and effective interaction between participants and instructors and b) detailed practical demonstration and hands-on sessions. Therefore participants will be organized in three (3) groups of five 5).
