Preserving Cultural Heritage Amidst Climate Change: A Europe Direct Crete Colloquium Featuring discussions on how coastal monuments can be safeguarded
On the occasion of the celebration of European Maritime Days, the European Information Centre of the Region of Crete (Europe Direct Crete Region), in collaboration with the Regional Unit of Chania and the Municipality of Chania, organized a public debate on:
Homer’s Beaches: The Hospitality of the Sea in Culture and social evolution and the Challenges of Today[1231]
Academics and researchers discussed with the public the impact of climate change on Mediterranean monuments, with emphasis on its adverse effects on heritage sites located in coastal areas.
PhoHS team was represented by Dr. Paraskevi Pouli who shared results and insights on the research activities of the EU project HERACLES . Within this project IESL-FORTH developed methodologies and portable spectroscopic and imaging instruments for the analysis, documentation, and monitoring of surface alteration on monuments with emphasis to the effects caused due to the climatic change. Research within HERACLES focused on the Roca a Mare (Coule) coastal fortress and the Minoan Palace of Knossos in Heraklion area.
The event took place on the morning of Thursday, October 31, 2024, at the Naval Museum of Crete – Moro Neoria, in Chania.
