The first Interim e-meeting of the project CALLOS «Conservation of Athens antiquities with Laser and Lidar technologies Open to Science and public» was successfully organized on Monday 7th of December 2020. All collaborating partners presented their work while coordinated for their future actions.
The CALLOS project is a collaborative effort between the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Athens, the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (IESL-FORTH) and the private company Raymetrics SA.
Main aim of CALLOS project is the implementation of innovative diagnostic methods and conservation procedures, which are based on advanced optical and laser technologies, and have as application field the emblematic monuments and archaeological sites of Athens. Additionally, CALLOS aims at establishing an open-to-the-public conservation laboratory allowing, on the one hand, scientists and researchers to apply in-situ innovative practices that have been studied and developed in the laboratory, and enabling, on the other hand, archaeologists and conservators of antiquities to enhance the dissemination of their activities to the specialized community as well as to the general public.
At the same time, supported by the Centre for Cultural Informatics of the Information Systems Laboratory (CCI-ISL) of the Institute of Computer Sciences (ICS) at FORTH, a digital repository will be developed, which will host all the results of the new methods and will be accessible through the Project’s website.
CALLOS aims in showcasing to the general public that laser technology not only belongs to science fiction films but also, among a plethora of applications, can be used to analyze, map, clean and ultimately protect monuments. At the same time, the project will shed light to the presence and activity of a whole micro-biocosmos, which may act parasitically or coexist harmoniously with the ancient monuments, and eventually will support the development of a customized diagnostic, analytical and conservation methodology.
The involvement of the public in the works of CALLOS, is expected to highly and actively contribute to the appreciation and preservation of cultural heritage, both as a priority in people’s mind as well as a guide for the development of appropriate State’s policies.
The open-to-the-public conservation laboratory will operate at the premises of the Ephorate in the Athens city center. It is expected to open to the public in about two years’ time, and the research team is looking forward to disseminating the acquired knowledge in a unique experience of communication with the timeless glow of the monuments of the city of Athens.

About the CALLOS project
The Project «Conservation of Athens antiquities with Laser and Lidar technologies Open to Science and public» (CALLOS) operates in the frame of the Special Action “OPEN INNOVATION IN CULTURE” and is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and national resources through the Operational Program “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship & Innovation” (NSRF -EPAnEK) (project code MIS- 5056208).
Coordinator of the Project is The Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Athens, while the “Photonics For Heritage Science” group of FORTH is responsible for its scientific supervision.
The Project duration is thirty-six (36) months (starting date is the 28-02-2020).

Η πρώτη ενδιάμεση διαδικτυακή συνάντηση του έργου CALLOS- «Ανοιχτό Εργαστήριο Συντήρησης των Μνημείων της Αθήνας με τεχνολογίες Laser και LIDAR», πραγματοποιήθηκε με επιτυχία τη Δευτέρα 07 Δεκεμβρίου 2020, κατά την οποία οι συνεργαζόμενοι φορείς παρουσίασαν το έργο τους και συντονίστηκαν για τις μελλοντικές τους δράσεις.
Στο έργο CALLOS συμπράττουν η Εφορεία Αρχαιοτήτων της Πόλης των Αθηνών (ΕΦΑΠΑ), το Ινστιτούτο Ηλεκτρονικής Δομής και Λέιζερ του Ιδρύματος Τεχνολογίας και Έρευνας(ΙΗΔΛ-ΙΤΕ) και η εταιρεία Raymetrics A.E.
Βασικός στόχος του έργου είναι η εφαρμογή καινοτόμων διαγνωστικών μεθόδων και διαδικασιών συντήρησης, οι οποίες βασίζονται σε προηγμένες τεχνολογίες οπτικής και λέιζερ κι έχουν ως πεδίο δράσης εμβληματικούς αρχαιολογικούς χώρους και μνημεία της πόλης των Αθηνών. Επιπροσθέτως, το έργο αποσκοπεί στη δημιουργία ενός Ανοικτού Εργαστηρίου Συντήρησης (ΑΕΣ) το οποίο θα επιτρέπει, αφενός στους επιστήμονες και ερευνητές να εφαρμόσουν, in-situ, καινοτόμες πρακτικές που έχουν μελετηθεί και αναπτυχθεί στο εργαστήριο, και αφετέρου στους αρχαιολόγους και συντηρητές αρχαιοτήτων να ενισχύσουν τη διάχυση των δραστηριοτήτων τους τόσο προς το εξειδικευμένο όσο και προς το ευρύ κοινό.
Παράλληλα, με την υποστήριξη του Κέντρου Πολιτισμικής Πληροφορικής του Εργαστηρίου Πληροφοριακών Συστημάτων (CCI-ISL) του Ινστιτούτου Πληροφορικής του ΙΤΕ (ΙΠ-ΙΤΕ) θα αναπτυχθεί ένα ψηφιακό αποθετήριο το οποίο θα φιλοξενήσει το σύνολο των αποτελεσμάτων των νέων μεθόδων και θα είναι προσβάσιμο μέσω της ιστοσελίδας του έργου.
Τo CALLOS καλείται να δείξει στο ευρύ κοινό ότι τα λέιζερ δεν ανήκουν μόνο σε ταινίες επιστημονικής φαντασίας αλλά και ότι, ανάμεσα στην πληθώρα των εφαρμογών τους, μπορούν με κατάλληλες επιστημονικές μεθόδους και διατάξεις να αναλύουν, χαρτογραφούν, καθαρίζουν κι εν τέλει προστατεύουν τα μνημεία. Παράλληλα, το έργο θα ρίξει περισσότερο φως στην παρουσία και τη δράση ενός ολόκληρου μικρο-βιόκοσμου που άλλοτε δρα παρασιτικά και άλλοτε συμβιώνει αρμονικά με τα αρχαία μάρμαρα και θα βοηθήσει στην ανάπτυξη μεθοδολογίας για την κατάλληλη διάγνωση, ανάλυση και αντιμετώπισή του.
Εμπλέκοντας το κοινό στις εργασίες του CALLOS, ευελπιστούμε ότι μετέχουμε με τον δικό μας μάχιμο τρόπο στην κατανόηση της αξίας της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς και την διατήρησή της αφενός ως προτεραιότητα στο μυαλό των ανθρώπων αλλά και αφετέρου ως κρατική υποχρέωση ανάμεσα στις πολιτικές που σχεδιάζονται.
Το Ανοικτό Εργαστήριο Συντήρησης (ΑΕΣ) θα λειτουργήσει στις εγκαταστάσεις της ΕΦΑΠΑ στο κέντρο της Αθήνας. Οι πόρτες και διαδικτυακές πύλες του ΑΕΣ του CALLOS αναμένεται να ανοίξουν για το κοινό σε 2 περίπου χρόνια και η ερευνητική ομάδα ανυπομονεί να μεταλαμπαδεύσει την αποκτηθείσα γνώση σε μια μοναδική εμπειρία επικοινωνίας με την διαχρονική λάμψη των μνημείων της πόλης των Αθηνών.

Το έργο CALLOS:
Το έργο CALLOS υλοποιείται στο πλαίσιο της Ειδικής Δράσης «ΑΝΟΙΧΤΗ ΚΑΙΝΟΤΟΜΙΑ ΣΤΟΝ ΠΟΛΙΤΙΣΜΟ» και συγχρηματοδοτείται από το Ευρωπαϊκό Ταμείο Περιφερειακής Ανάπτυξης (ΕΤΠΑ) της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης και εθνικούς πόρους μέσω του Ε.Π. Ανταγωνιστικότητα, Επιχειρηματικότητα & Καινοτομία (ΕΠΑνΕΚ) (κωδικός έργου MIS- 5056208).
Συντονιστής του Έργου έχει οριστεί η Εφορεία Αρχαιοτήτων Πόλης Αθηνών ενώ την επιστημονική εποπτεία έχει το εργαστήριο εφαρμογών φωτονικής στην Πολιτιστική Κληρονομιά (Photonics For Heritage Science, PhoHS) του ΙΗΔΛ-ΙΤΕ. Το έργο θα διαρκέσει τριάντα έξι μήνες (Ημερομηνία έναρξης στις 28-02-2020).
